I learned a number of important things during my high school exchange experience in France. The most fun things I learned were all food oriented:

1. Alsace has the best pizza in the world. In hindsight, I likely cost my host family a small fortune in pizza.

2. Swiss chocolate is worth the hype. I had the good fortune of visiting France during Eastertide, the better fortune of being in the region of France that was near the Swiss border, and the best fortune of my host’s grandmother thinking that everyone should have a bag of Swiss chocolates for Easter. I savored that little bag of chocolates, carrying them back with me to New Orleans. I’m still working on forgiving my kid brother for eating ALL OF THEM in the middle of the night. 😩🤣

3. Pastries from local shops in France all taste like food for royalty. Pain au chocolat should be chosen always, the other items are lagniappe.

4. Nutella. Period. I’d neither seen nor heard of it before the trip. Its place on my host family’s breakfast table began my love affair with the condiment, and with the hazelnut+chocolate flavor combination.

And that’s how the Fan au Chocolat cookie was born. It’s a Frangelico flavored, bittersweet chocolate studded and crushed hazelnut topped shortbread cookie. If you’re a fan of any of those items, there’s a good chance that it’ll be your new favorite cookie.
