Can sad stories have happy endings? Sometimes. And when they do, we should celebrate.
The Pure Gold Cookie is a love letter to Black women in recovery from addiction - specifically addiction to crack cocaine.
It brings me great joy to celebrate these fighters. It brings me great pride to call two of them auntie. It brings me great sorrow to think of the ways in which life circumstances, institutional racism, prison sentences in lieu of rehab, and literal conspiracy stole years of so many of their lives. Crack, for so many, was a trial by fire. We celebrate the fact that they came forth as pure gold.
The cookie in their honor is made with browned butter and brown sugar, then studded with toffee chips and rimmed with metallic gold sanding sugar.Â
