When it comes to Juneteenth, "the color is red." The holiday's official colors are red white and blue - a nod to the holiday's symbolic reminder that those becoming free were, indeed Americans. Pan-African colors (red, green, black, and yellow/gold) are most commonly associated with the holiday - a nod to the colors of pan-Africanism). Red foods and drinks are served on Juneteenth either in remembrance of the blood shed by the enslaved or in honor of their strength, resilience, and ingenuity during enslavement - depending on who you ask.
We've chosen a red velvet cake cookie as our red food for this year's Juneteenth celebration. It's a common addition to Juneteenth tables (and tables at Black family gathering in general). Ours is colored with a combination of dried red beets (don't worry, it doesn't taste like them), cocoa, and a hint of a little tart addition. With the bonus of a pretty little glaze drizzle, the cookie is truly a mind bending experience - cake as a cookie.
