There's a decent chance that the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Black Panther is a movie. There's a better chance that, if you're familiar with the Black Panther Party, you think of its work and principles in a controversial or negative light. We won't be delving into the doctoral dissertation that is the reason for the Party's formation, the full scope of its activities, or its controversial stances even within its own ranks. We've made a cookie to honor their most significant legacy: Free breakfast for school aged children.
At its peak, the Black Panthers' Free Breakfast for School Children program was feeding thousands of children per day in cities across the country. Their impact on children's ability to eat, and therefore, ability to learn ultimately inspired the nationwide expansion of the Federal School Breakfast Program - an almost unimaginable victory for food justice and gift to children and families around the country.
To honor their work of feeding hungry children, we have created a breakfast cookie. A taupe hued cookie flavored with deep brown sugar, the delight is studded with rolled oats, cranberries, golden raisins, and sunflower and pumpkins seeds. In a wink to the whimsy of children, each cookie is topped with an alphabet cookie, aptly gifted to us from a rescued food load by Columbus Food Rescue, a local food justice organization. The cookie eats like a meal, providing enough energy for deep thinking and strategic action toward loving our neighbors well.
