Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso was no unsung hero. Dubbed the Queen of Salsa, her vibrant personality, infectious smile and commanding voice won the hearts of millions. A proud Afro Cuban, Celia Cruz paid tribute to her ancestors in large and small ways, including through the use of the word "azucar" a reference to her enslaved ancestors’ work in sugar cane fields.
This cookie is a play on Arroz con Leche, a rice based dessert cherished in many countries but perfected in Cuba. It is, essentially, rice pudding.
A little spicy, a little sweet, this little cookie will give the people what they want.
