Born near the Hopi Nation in Arizona to evangelist parents, and “discovered” while living in Philly, it feels beautifully right that the woman we first met as Pam and came to love as Maxine Shaw Attorney at Law began signing her school work “Erika Alexander the Great” when she was a child. A nearly prophetic title, Ms. Alexander has truly spent her life playing characters who taught people how to live lives full of excellence, joy and laughter, while living a life in which she speaks up, speaks out, innovates, pivots, and shows the world that living into one's passions is both necessary and POSSIBLE. We were elated when Ohio Wesleyan University (Dee's alma mater) commissioned this cookie in celebration of Ms. Alexander's participation in this year's Melvin Van Peebles Symposium.

The cookie we’ve designed in Ms. Alexander’s honor has a vegan and gluten free peanut butter cookie base (a nod to her dietary practice, and love for PB & J sandwiches). There is jelly incorporated into the dough (a sour cherry jam made by a Pennsylvania based pastor). But jelly alone seemed too simple a way to celebrate. So we made the cookie great: we colored and flavors portions of the dough with blue spirulina (a wink to the blue corn of the Hopi), matcha powder (a wink to her badass green streak during the American Fiction press tour), and organic beetroot, guava, and dragon fruit powders (adding a red streak for her favorite Maxine Shaw dress). The combination landed us on a treat that is as dynamic as the woman, and beautiful inside and out.
