Patsy Mink: Hawaiian Holiday Snack Mix with Furikake Seasoning (140g)

The mother of Title IX has received pretty much any accolade a public icon can get: a museum installation, awards named after her, a namesake state park, her face on a quarter. And now, a spot in our State Based Treats Collection!

A third generation Hawaiian, Patsy Takemoto Mink was the first woman of color to serve in the United States Congress and the first Asian American woman to run for president. Though best known as principal author of Title IX (the foundational legislation that mandates gender based equality in federally funded education) Mink was the chief advocate of so many policy initiatives for equality and for so long, the first of her major legislative victories was vetoed by then President Richard Nixon!

The snack mix we've created in her honor is an homage to a mix that is a holiday standard in Hawaii: a cereal and snack food blend covered in a lightly sweetened and soy sauce kissed glaze and seasoned with authentic Japanese Aji Nori Furikake. We opted for fish shaped and holiday shaped pretzels as cheeky additions, and wasabi coated edamame for a pop of color and flavor.

A perfect blend of Hawaiian sweet and savory, a nod to the Congresswoman's Japanese ethnicity, and wink to the island's very American snack culture, this mix also memorializes Mink's family's connection to work on sugar cane plantation by using real superfine cane sugar.
